Romanian authorities seize more luxury cars at Andrew Tate compound

Romanian authorities have seized luxury cars from the compound of influencer Andrew Tate, who remains in custody on charges of rape and trafficking.

Organized crime prosecutors arrested Mr Tate, his brother Tristan and two Romanian suspects on December 29 on charges of forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit six women. They denied any wrongdoing.

On Saturday, several cars, including a Rolls-Royce, a BMW and a Mercedes-Benz, were removed from the complex on the outskirts of the capital, Bucharest, to be transported to a storage location.

Earlier this week, prosecutors said they seized 15 luxury vehicles and more than 10 properties and homes belonging to the suspects, in Bucharest as well as Prahova and Brasov counties, to prevent the assets from being sold or concealed.

Tate and his co-defendants arrived at the Bucharest court in handcuffs on Tuesday morning to challenge the 30-day arrest warrant under which they are being held.

But the Bucharest Court of Appeal dismissed the challenge and said they should remain in custody.

Eugen Vidineac, a Romanian defense lawyer representing the defendants, said after the hearing: “All four defendants made statements,” adding: “The lawyers’ pleas were fully listened to.

After Tate lost his appeal, a cryptic message on his Twitter account read: “When Allah said ‘I only test those I love’. I took the pain as if it were an honor – Abu Hurayrah .

It was one of many ambiguous posts that have appeared on the account since his arrest.

The Romanian Directorate for Organized Crime and Terrorism Investigations (DIIOCT) said after making the arrests that it had identified six victims who allege they were subjected by the group to “acts of physical violence and mental coercion” and having been sexually exploited by members of the group.

The agency said the victims were lured by pretenses of love, and then intimidated, monitored and coerced into performing pornographic acts intended to bring substantial sums to their exploiters.

If prosecutors can prove the Tates made money from human trafficking, the seized assets “will be taken by the state and [used to] cover the costs of the investigation and the damages to the victims”.

Tate, a former kickboxer and reality show contestant Big brothergained notoriety for his misogynistic remarks and hate speech.

His remarks saw him banned from all major social media platforms, although his Twitter account became active again in November after the platform was acquired by Elon Musk.

Tate, who holds both US and UK citizenship, has previously said women are partly responsible for rape and belong to men.

He continued to attract millions of social media followers and his Twitter account continued to post despite his detention.
