Losing games is a foreign concept for Real Madrid, but last weekend after losing to Villarreal, Los Blancos saw Barcelona regain possession at the top of La Liga. But the best way to bounce back from a loss is to start a new winning streak and Real Madrid can not only start one, but they can kick things off with a trophy defense in a competition in which they do well enough.

The Spanish Super Cup previously only included La Liga and Copa Del Rey winners, but was expanded in 2019 to include Copa del Rey and La Liga runners-up. As La Liga winners, Real Madrid will face Copa Del Rey runners-up Valencia, while La Liga runners-up Barcelona will face Copa Del Rey winners Real Betis. The winners of these two matches will then meet for the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday 15 January.

Barcelona are the most successful side in the cup, winning it 13 times, but if Real Madrid can pull off a win they will equal Barcelona with 13 titles by winning their third cup in a row. Valencia only won the cup once in 1999 while Real Betis never won it.

Here are our scenarios, how you can watch the game and more:

Real Madrid: The cracks were visible for Real Madrid ahead of the Villareal draw as defense and discipline were a problem for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Defense has always been a problem for Real Madrid as they are a team that would rather outplay the opposition and let Thibaut Courtois go to work in the net, but when the team receives red cards and concedes penalties left and right, it’s hard to walk a tightrope. But as always, Real Madrid are a good day behind Karim Benzema from victory.

Valencia: With average league performances, Valencia will be looking to throw everything in this game. They have lost three of their last five matches but while the defense has been solid, Valencia’s attack has not been there this season. The team have scored a goal or less in four of their last five games, with the only exception being a game against Real Betis where they played a man to close things out.

The defense will keep Valencia in the game against Real Madrid but who will win the game for them? American Yunus Musah is a special midfielder who can dribble the ball into space, but when the team reaches the attacking third there is no one to put the ball in the net. Edinson Cavani has been signed to be that presence and he has five goals this season, but he’s scored just one in his last three matches. If the Cavani that Valencia had in October who scored four goals and assisted one more in the month shows up for the game, there could be an upset in the cards.

Valencia will make the game frustrating for Real Madrid, but they won’t be able to score enough to stave off a late pressure wave that Los Blancos will lead to victory. Take: Real Madrid 2, Valencia 1
