Pokemon Scarlet and Violet reach a critical sales milestone two months after release, surpassing their predecessors Pokemon Sword and Shield.


Pokemon scarlet and violet achieved a major sales milestone, selling more units in eight weeks than Pokémon Sword and Shield done in three years. The popularity of Pokemon scarlet and violet is stronger than ever and could make these games some of the best-selling titles in the series.


Pokemon scarlet and violet are the latest entries in the Pokemon series, taking the franchise to the Spain-inspired region of Paldea. In addition to adding 103 new Pokémon for trainers to capture, Pokemon scarlet and violet feature an open-world setting and three different stories filled with their own quests. These titles also bring their share of new features, from auto-battles to the Terastal phenomenon and up to four-player co-op.

The Japanese game sales database Game Data Library has shared a graph showing the total retail sales of Pokemon scarlet and violet in Japan. In eight weeks, the latest Pokemon games have sold more units than their predecessors, sword and shield, in three years. Since their release in November 2022, Pokemon scarlet and violet have sold over 6 million copies in Japan, including physical and digital sales.

When they leave, Pokemon scarlet and violet achieved the biggest game launch in Japan, selling over four million units in less than a week. In three days, Pokemon scarlet and violet exceeded lifetime sales of Pokemon Legends: Arceusthe semi-open world game set before the events of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Eight weeks after their original release, sales of Pokemon scarlet and violet are still as good as ever, making this new opus one of the best-selling games in Japan. Pokemon scarlet and violet sold more units in eight weeks than pokemon black and white, Animal Crossing: New Horizonsand Pokémon Gold and Silver done in the same time frame.

Despite their popularity and incredible sales figures, Pokemon scarlet and violet suffer from various technical problems. Players have shared clips showing their character sneaking through a cave wall, NPCs disappearing down a flight of stairs, or creatures appearing deformed. A glitch even prevented Pokemon scarlet and violet players to complete gym challenges, which are one of the main objectives of these games.

Nintendo and Game Freak have announced an upcoming patch to fix most of the bugs plaguing the user experience. Update 1.2 for Pokemon scarlet and violet will fix technical issues and add new features, without further details on what this entails. This new patch will be available to all players at the end of February, with more information on its contents hopefully before then.
