Xbox owners might consider the console their secondary system.

It appears that Xbox Series owners are far less likely to consider their console their primary one compared to PS5 owners, in the UK, in new research from Ampere Analysis.

The research firm claims that nearly half, or 48% to be exact, of Xbox Series X owners consider it the console they use the most. Reversed, that means 52% of Xbox Series X owners don’t consider it their primary system. As for the less powerful Xbox Series S, only 35% of its owners consider it their primary system. This contrasts with owners of PS5 (the disc version) with 71% of respondents considering it the console they used the most.

Piers Harding Rolls, games analyst at Ampere Analysis, reported that PS5 owners are more likely to treat it as their “primary console” compared to all other consoles. In second place was the PS4, with 54% of owners considering it the console they use the most, while the Nintendo Switch was behind the PS5 and PS4, and tied with the Xbox One/One S, with 49% of owners consider it their main system.

“In a market where most console gamers play across multiple consoles, including multiple brands, the role of the ‘primary console’ has big implications for user monetization, lifetime value, and market share” , said Harding-Rolls, in a follow-up. Tweeter. The analyst suggested that Sony’s strategy of big exclusives coupled with the company’s traditionally strong brand recognition with UK consumers “hasn’t yet been substantially disrupted by Microsoft’s Game Pass strategy”, at least to date. UK.

Microsoft is gearing up for a big year for Game Pass and exclusives including Redfall and Starfield for 2023, so that could change, but the results seem to support the perception that gamers are getting an Xbox, and in particular the Series S, as a than secondary ‘Game Pass System’. Ampere Analysis has suggested that PS5 owners consider it their primary console as they are more likely to only own one console. However, this is for the disc version. Of those who own the PS5 Digital Edition, only 43% consider it their primary system, suggesting that more and more avid gamers are getting disc-based console versions.

Xbox Series X and S side by side

Curiously, only 39% of PS4 Pro owners use this console the most, while the lowest ranked console was Xbox Series S with 35%, which even ranked below Xbox One X (38%).

However, Harding-Rolls pointed out on Twitter that this metric does not show comparative time spent on different consoles and that the ratio could change this year as Microsoft has a fuller release schedule for 2023 compared to last year.
