After almost 25 years, the original Fallout 2 from Black Isle Studios is being revised to include new voice lines for the already modified additional talking heads. The classic isometric RPG game is still making the rounds all these years later, with a free Fallout 2 FPS game available now for example, and this voice lines mod aims to combine with another to naturally enhance the original Fallout 2 experience. Hope this fills you up before the Fallout 5 release date.
The original Fallout 2 has 13 “talking heads”, which are close-up portraits that move their mouths and have voice lines for specific NPCs. These heads were based on pre-made clay models, and at the time, they took some time to manufacture, so the number of talking heads in Fallout and Fallout 2 was significantly reduced from initial expectations.
That’s about to change, though, as Goat_Boy’s Talking Heads Addon mod from last year is going to be expanded and improved by a new project, which wants to give each additional talking head voice lines. Goat_Boy’s mod adds over 100 original talking heads to Fallout 2, so there’s a lot of work to be done.
This additional mod from Black_Electric is currently in an Alpha build and has 17 additional talking heads now with over 600 lines of dialogue, but there are “well over 100 characters we are still looking to cast”. The volunteer project wants people to submit voice lines for a character they think they can do justice to, with one person then chosen to voice all the lines.
“This is a monumental task spanning approximately 150 characters and thousands and thousands of lines of dialogue,” says Black_Electric. “Although we may not be able to get them all voiced, we hope to cover most of them.”
Fallout 2 continues to be loved after all this time, and we even spoke with co-director Feargus Urguhart about why Fallout 2 is one of many games to define the RPG series.
For me, the truly amazing thing about this project isn’t just that it’s a colossal labor of love for Fallout 2, it’s how the project combines two distinct mods on a large scale and still attempts to act as a natural extension of the original game. . I’m sure if Black Isle had had the time and money and resources during the initial development of Fallout 2, the devs would have wanted more talking heads and voice lines, because they already had a few, so for seeing the community come together and do it themselves is amazing.
