‘Destiny 2’ starts to feel more and more broken over time

Bungie released a new Destiny 2 patch yesterday that was apparently quite minor, but it had some pretty big ramifications for the wider game, it seems.

Bungie has acknowledged at least the first two issues, and they say the first two have calm.

  • There has been an increase in anteater errors, which will lock you out of any activity.
  • There was an issue with activity completion, which seemed to particularly affect Gambit where matches don’t count, not returning any rewards and telling people they quit early once the game was over and sometimes suspending them from the game .
  • There is at least one documented case of someone receiving a typical “contact Destiny servers” message, only to find their Titan completely deleted. Although so far this appears to be an isolated case and it is unconfirmed if this is a permanent situation, it is still somewhat disconcerting. Bungie has yet to comment on this one.

Destiny 2 is struggling difficult this season with technical problems. Most notably, they had to disable the API twice in order to fix a series of error codes that were kicking players out of the game, and just in general the game seems very unstable, more so than it was Last year.

All of these issues have me wondering about the whole “clean slate” issue with Destiny 2, where as a live service, since 2017 Destiny 2 has just added more and more content, while removing other bits, and playing with the engine and these days it feels like it’s crumbling at the seams. I’m concerned that the game continues to overlap issue after issue with two other known upcoming expansions, and hint that future expansion after The Final Shape would also be Destiny 2 content, as no entirely new game is to come.

I don’t know enough about Destiny 2’s technical backend to fully understand or explain what’s going on here, but I do know what it’s been like as a player to see these issues spread through the game like mold . For example, the “match completion” bug has been going on for months, and now it’s been hugely amplified with this latest issue, having never been fully fixed.

These are probably deep-rooted and hard-to-solve problems, but they have to be solved. Yes, Bungie has clamped down on the most recent and shockingly bad things right now, but those core issues remain, and this year, this season, things have gotten noticeably worse.
