‘Destiny 2’ and the case of the missing characters

Something a little…strange and unsettling is going on with Destiny 2 right now, and while I don’t want to spark some kind of mass panic, it seems like it’s worth addressing.

This week, a post was posted on reddit by a player who claimed he simply had one of his characters, and all of his god-rolled gear, erased from existence.

This led to a lot of skepticism from the community, digging into this person’s profile, saying they’ve deleted a bunch of characters in the past, and suspecting this is a kind of fraud and publication to get attention.

This does not seem to be the case. This situation was escalated to such an extent that Bungie tasked an entire team to dig into this specific player’s lost character. Finally, yesterday, the Hippy Community Manager chimed in with an update:

“Morning! We have an update: multiple teams have been diving into this and we haven’t uncovered any evidence that other accounts or characters have been affected.

Since this was a unique situation, we were able to come up with a unique solution to restore the character. While we understand that players would like to be able to restore deleted characters whenever they want, this was an extremely complicated process that required a variety of teams and many hours to implement for a single account, but the feedback on this feature has been noted. .

We appreciate your patience and thank you for your help while we worked on a solution!

Bungie still hasn’t specified exactly what happened here, but it wasn’t “this person deleted their character and lied about it” as Bungie would have liked to clarify.

And yet, even though they say it was a once-in-a-lifetime situation and no one else is in danger, it’s not 100% clear that this is true. Often things can to see more isolated than them. For example, I remember two weeks ago when DMG said that progress loss on error codes only happens to 1 in 250,000 players or something. It happened to me, and it was… definitely a lot more than that, which is why the API was shut down a second time to fix it.

For this character deletion bug, I’ve heard whispers about people having had this in the past. And right now another post is going up on reddit about who lost a wizard during The Dawning with 800 hours on it.

I heard of a bug where after an error you can log in to find a character that looks like it was deleted, or the game restarts and takes you to the character select screen. This happened to me a while ago, but it was usually fixed by restarting the game, and everything is back. This seems to be separate from that kind of issue, as these are players who waited for their characters to return, and they just never did.

It’s certainly possible that like the Warlock originally did, this happened to other people, and they just didn’t post about it, created a new character and moved on thing. Creating a new character in Destiny isn’t the end of the world considering your vault items should still be there, but you have to do annoying things like unlock stasis again or resharpen items you might have. be lost on that specific character. It’s bad, but you can overcome it. A lot of people delete characters just to redo their faces, after all.

And yet, if this really isn’t an isolated issue, it looks like Bungie is going to investigate this further to make sure it doesn’t spread. I’ve heard of enough instances of this happening where it seemed like more than one “one guy had a weirdly specific problem”, and if we’ve seen anything in Destiny it’s that small glitches can sometimes spread and become big problems.

I’m not saying don’t log into Destiny and play, because the likelihood of that happening seems incredibly remote if we’re talking about a few instances among millions of players. And yet, it doesn’t feel like we make know the full extent of that, and maybe Bungie either.
