Audient unveils its smart EVO SP8 mic preamp for musicians

British audio company Audient have been designing and building interfaces for the music industry since 1997. Their innovative EVO range of audio recording equipment has proven hugely popular, combining superb sound quality with incredibly competitive prices. Audient has now unveiled the EVO SP8, an eight-channel intelligent preamp with AD/DA.

The SP8 has eight mic/line inputs, eight line outputs, and two ADAT I/O connections. This smart 8-channel mic preamp has enough inputs and outputs to handle multi-mic recording sessions like drum recording or even a full band.

“Larger sessions require more channels, and expanding your existing audio interface via ADAT might be the most cost-effective way to scale your studio,” says Andy Allen, Marketing Director of Audient/EVO. “EVO SP8 does just that, giving you eight studio-grade analog preamps, a modern, intuitive user experience with exceptional audio performance at every level.”

As with all EVO products, the SP8 includes Audient’s Smartgain feature, an innovative and fast way to automatically adjust gain levels at the touch of a button. As with the EVO 16, the EVO SP8 can automatically adjust the gain of its eight channels at once, making it ideal for musicians with multiple mic inputs (like drummers) or line inputs (synthesizers) .

Allen adds, “If you’re expanding your current non-EVO audio interface, you get up to eight channels of simultaneous Smartgain with SP8, eliminating the guesswork of adjusting levels and saving time. If you pair two SP8s with your EVO 16, you have Smartgain on all 24 channels and can check the sound of an entire band in less than 20 seconds. Imagine how this could transform a session and allow producers to stay focused on what’s important: making music.

The SP8 features a high-resolution color LCD screen designed to quickly and accurately navigate its hardware features. The wide-angle screen intelligently displays information as needed, turning the EVO SP8 into an easy-to-use smart preamp. There is also an option to view channel status and monitor metering levels using a centralized one-button system to adjust all hardware settings.

The powerful EVO mic preamp combines all the sonic benefits of a studio-grade analog mic preamp with digitally controlled tactile precision. Users can set gain levels precisely down to the decibel. EVO mic preamps deliver 58dB of mic gain, while 32-bit converter technology delivers 121dB of dynamic range.

As with the EVO 16, the SP8 has a solid steel chassis with non-slip rubber feet, allowing it to fit comfortably on a desk, in a portable rig, or as a permanent fixture in the studio. Optional rack ears make it even more flexible.

Price and availability: Audient’s EVO SP8 is expected to ship in Q1 2023 and will sell for $499 / £399.
