I will say it, video games should be more exciting, especially cookie-cutter AAA action games. There are only a limited number of gruff white male leads that I can accept. Luckily, back in 2010, action game experts Platinum Games thought precisely that, releasing a new title that blended a campy, vigorous appeal and satisfying combat to make it one of the best action games of all time , Bayonet, and spawning a now beloved franchise. He also introduced the world to everyone’s favorite domineering witch. And we’re all better for it.

Love at first sight – From its first moments, Bayonet is a gripping game. It throws players into the middle of a battle atop a falling clock tower against angels. You take control of a mysterious woman dressed in black, wearing a masquerade mask and a large hooded cape.

She fights alongside another woman dressed in red as the narration tells the player of an endless factional conflict. They shoot and smash their way through waves of enemies as flickering effects and kiss marks appear during combat.

Before you know it, the scene cuts to a graveyard with the black-clad woman now dressed as an alluring nun, as the angels slash her clothes which fall off with revealing strokes of skin until she throw them away completely. Now she looks classy in a skintight black bodysuit with lots of skin on her back and wearing high heels. She starts kicking the ass of every angel in sight. This is your introduction to Bayonetta.

If you don’t like it right away, then I pity you.

Bayonetta as a character and as a show is known for two things: being excited and a good fight. While the wanton moans, cash shots and innuendos that abound in Bayonet can look like the opposite of a boss girl, Bayonet kisses her with a wink to the audience and makes the camp full.

Unlike games like Chainsaw Lollipopwho feels voyeuristic in his objectification of Juliet Starling, Bayonet revels in the joys of female power exuded by the titular witch. The franchise joke is that Bayonetta would probably never give you the time of day, she’s just a hot mom with guns for shoes that I … I want to say that players simply remotely.

Love is a battlefield – But Bayonet is more than a pretty face. Platinum Games is recognized as one of the best action game developers in the business today. With titles like win, NieR: Automataand Metal Gear Rising: Revenge the studio has continually delivered some of the best action games out there. Bayonet is the root of that pedigree, as the studio’s first major AAA release.

Bayonet’The combat is no less expertly crafted than any of the studio’s later releases. Clearly based on the devil may cry as his greatest inspiration, Bayonet challenges players to earn a high rank in each combat encounter by racking up combos, beating time limits, and using special skills like Witch Time. It all has the feel and look of a big action game that inspires you to keep working towards higher scores.

Even in combat, the camp of Bayonet is palpable. Bayonetta seductively chastises her foes, then performs special tortures or punish attacks that see her in an even more revealing version of her signature skintight costume as she suggestively treads on enemies with her heels or spanks them until they are defeated (wish that was me).

Despite strong performances, a sequel to Bayonet was shelved until Nintendo stepped in to provide more funding and resources. Since then, the very little family witch has taken up residence at Nintendo. With three games in the series and a prequel coming in March, Bayonetta has solidified itself as an unlikely mascot and continues to live on in gamers’ hearts.

Bayonet is available on Nintendo Switch and PC.
